Just as I was about to let my wave of relief carry me out of the office, my father stopped me.
âOctavia, wait. An invitation has arrived for you from House Reddington.â
âFrom Countess Reddington?â
âShe wants to invite you to her junior ball two days from now.â
Only the king could hold a ball. All other nobles held junior balls. Esfia made this distinction very clear. Naturally, all balls were held at the royal castle. So even if I didnât attend any junior balls, there would be no social repercussions, as long as I attended the proper balls here. However, it was a little unusual for somebody to invite a guest to either type of ball just two days prior.
âMy, what a rushed invitation,â I said.
âIt seems there were some issues on her end. She probably wants you there as her centerpiece. Your appearance at these sorts of social functions is rare, after all.â
Rosa Reddington was one of the few noblewomen in Esfia who held any appreciable amount of power. She was a countess and thirty-five years old. She and I had spoken many times at public gatherings. So if I had to sayâ¦I guess we were friends?
The junior ball, ehâ¦? Iâve been diligently ditching this sort of social function my whole life!
In my defense, Esfiaâs junior balls were far from typical. Youâd eat, dance, and socialize there. Boys and girls would dance together, too. That much was typical.
Butâ¦boys would also dance with boys! It was a place where many boys found their Prince Charmings.
Only in Esfia, amirite?
At first, the fujoshi in me really enjoyed attending the balls to people-watch. But Iâm a hopeless romantic, too, you know! There I was, no signs of romance on my horizon, being forced to watch all the boys become couples left and right, year after year⦠Itâs torture for a teenage girl! I know all too well how my eyes were glazing over like a dead fish, just like my handmaids.
Which was why every time an invitation came from some noble family, Iâd attend only when absolutely necessary, and Iâd ditch the rest.
But that would all end today. I made the decision to attend as many social events as possible to find a boyfriend.
âWhat sorts of people do you suppose will attend?â I asked.
Although, seeing as how itâs mostly gonna be nobles on my big brotherâs side, maybe I shouldnât get my hopes up.
My father reached out and silently handed me the invitation. I took it and glanced over it. There was a short, polite letter to me, followed by the names of all the attendees.
Hmm⦠Neither of the leaders of the two main factions of Esfia are on the list. And I donât see very many influential noblemen on here, either⦠Oh, wait!
There was my man! There were the glittering letters, dancing on the paper: Duke Nightfellow! It looked like his eldest sonâDerek Nightfellowâwas on the list right after him. Derek was a friend of Sirius, so asking him to be my (fake) boyfriend would
